CONSTITUTION

 

1.

Name: The name of the association is The Japan Branch of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures (IASIL Japan). Members of IASIL Japan shall also be Members of IASIL.

2.

Objective: The objective of IASIL Japan is to promote the study of Irish literatures in Japan by means of

  1. The Annual Conference and occasional lecture meetings.
  2. The promotion of cultural exchange between Japan, Ireland and other countries and, in particular, by direct links with IASIL.
  3. Annual publication of the Association bulletin, the Journal of Irish Studies (originally The Harp)
3. Composition: The Association shall consist of the Members, the Committee, the Editor of the Journal, the Secretary and the President. In accordance with IASIL practice the Members shall elect a Vice-Chair and Regional Representatives of IASIL.
4. Appointment of the Committee: The Members shall elect the Committee by a postal ballot of all Members.
5. Appointment of the President: The Committee shall elect the President.
6. Additional Committee Members: The Committee can co-opt additional members to join as Committee Members and assist in the work of the society.
7. Record: Committee meetings shall be recorded and the Minutes distributed to Committee Members and Editorial Board Members.
8. Term: The President and Committee shall hold office for three years. Committee Members may offer themselves for continuous re-election, but the President may only stand once for re-election.
9. Journal: All fully paid up members are entitled to receive a copy, and the Journal shall be edited in accordance with the Guidelines for the Journal of Irish Studies.
10. Membership: Membership of the Association shall be divided into the following categories:

a) Ordinary with the Irish University Review.

b) Ordinary without the Irish University Review.

c) Such other categories (e.g., membership for students and the unsalaried, couple membership) as the Executive Committee may from time to time determine.

11. Subscriptions:
a) The annual subscription shall be such as may be determined from time to time by the Executive Committee in respect of each category of member.

b) The Executive Committee shall have power to allow reduced subscriptions following an Ordinary Member’s retirement from professional duties, for members who are unemployed, for undergraduate students and for graduates engaged in full time work for a higher degree. Other reductions shall have to be approved by the Annual General Meeting.

c) Overseas IASIL Japan members will be charged additional fees concerning international mailing costs. The international postal rates for the Journal of Irish Studies and Irish University Review shall be such as may be determined from time to time by the Executive Committee in respect of each member’s membership category and postal address.
12. Expenses: The expenses of the society are to be defrayed from membership fees, donations, grants etc. The Treasurer shall maintain the accounts.
13. Annual general meeting: A general meeting shall be held annually to discuss any matters relative to the society, and the vote of the meeting shall be binding on matters relative to the society.

Fiscal Year: The fiscal year of IASIL Japan begins on 1 April and ends on 31 March the following year.

Changes: Any changes to the constitution must be approved by a majority vote at the Annual General Meeting.
